Context:

For my Visual Thinking class we were assigned a project focusing on enhancing learning in the classroom for elementary school kids. Our professor, Dr. Attia was open to working with students and allowing us to branch out from the original project prompt giving us full creative freedom.

⚡️Project Goal

Create an interactive learning experience through AR means

The purpose of this project was to enhance learning in the classroom through AR technologies and keep kids engaged in the clasrrom.

Problem Statement

Core education for elementary schools tends to have non-engaging activities for the science subject. Therefore, the concepts are hard to grasp due to the lack of focus in kids. This project aims to examine the use of interactive technology and augmented reality to enhance the lessons taught by making them more engaging for K-6 students.

Our Idea💡

Create an immersive learning table.

Little lessons is a smart immersive learning table for kids blending science and augmented reality with interactive chip reader technology.

Design Process

1.

Brainstorming

To narrow down our choices we started off brainstorming and seeing what are existing practices inside the classroom and how we can improve it to keep kids engaged.

2.

Research

For our research we decided to take advantage of living so close to silicon valley and taking a trip up to the tech interactive. The tech interactive is a children's technology museum that offers hands-on STEM related labs & activities.

Our Findings

We found that a most of the interactive technology used for the exhibits at The Tech included projection, projection mapping and touch screens.

Inspiration & Mood Board

Le Petit Chef

One of our inspirations was Le Petit Chef. This interactive dinner experience inspired me to want to create an immersive interactive experience for kids. The kids being able to see the chef make the dinner in front of them inspired me to want to do an educational version for kids, like a chemistry lesson.

A Day Made of Glass

Our other inspiration was the video "A Day Made of Glass" specifically when the glass table is an interactive touchscreen table. We thought this would be a great way to keep kids engaged.

Lessons We Picked & Why

The lessons we picked were based on the Next Generation Science Standards. The “PS1.B Chemical Reactions: heating and cooling substances cause changes that are sometimes reversible and sometimes not.” The target audience is K-6 graders.

We chose this lesson for our project because we could showcase the chemical reactions between earths basic elements. We think this can be illustrated creativley and will keep children engaged. Kids these days are struggling with lack of focus due to the basic textbook ways of teaching so we hope little lessons can inspire kids to be involved with their schoolwork.
